Non-invasive determination of
Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs)

The AGE Reader offers a non-invasive, elegantly simple and fast determination of AGEs (Advanced Glycation Endproducts) by measuring the autofluorescence of the skin (Skin AF). Due to the excellent scientific literature base, the method is ideally suited for screening in health care, medical practices, clinics, occupational health management (OHM), epidemiology and other areas.

What is measured?

The AGE Reader determines the so-called Advanced Glycation Endproducts, metabolic end products stored throughout the body. They occur more frequently in people at risk as a result of oxidative stress, incipient or existing metabolic disorders or an inadequate lifestyle. AGEs accelerate cell ageing and lead to vascular deposits. Overall, AGEs play a decisive role in the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.

How is it measured?

The measurement is carried out using an optical method on the skin of the forearm, which is only placed on the AGE Reader for a short time. The measurement result is shown on the built-in color display within a few seconds, compared with the standard value of a person of the same age and assigned to a risk level. The handy AGE Reader, equipped with a lithium-ion battery, is portable and can therefore be used in different locations without any effort. The measured values can be transferred via Bluetooth® to a PC for convenient management in the AGE Reader app. Consumables are not required.

What does the measurement mean for the services you offer?

With the AGE Reader app (Windows and Mac), you can create an impressive but easy-to-understand risk report based on the measured value and give it to your client. This allows you to clearly document risks and progress and show your client the directly measurable benefits of your planned or implemented interventions.

Why measure AGEs?

The method has been validated in recent years in various large-scale clinical studies involving tens of thousands of people in the healthy control group, diabetics, cardiovascular and kidney patients. The AGE Reader has been used for a large number of publications on Advanced Glycation Endproducts, their effects and clinical significance. One of the most important studies in recent years shows the results of a population study with almost 72,000 participants from a wide age range. The authors1 conclude:

"The non-invasive determination of skin autofluorescence [AGE Reader] can be used in a general population to assess the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardio-vascular disease or mortality."

Added to this is the extremely elegant measurement procedure. The examination with AGE Reader is

  • fast - approx. 10 seconds

  • comfortable for the test person - the forearm is placed on the device

  • non-invasive - an optical measurement is taken on the skin

  • completely operator-independent - no specialist medical staff required

  • cost-effective - no consumables

Screening with the AGE Reader is of particular clinical value for detection and risk assessment, regardless of hyperglycemia or metabolic syndrome.
